Sesame® Handle System: A Gripping New Product Years in the Making

The Need for More Consumer-Centric Packaging
Boxes shouldn’t break, handles shouldn’t tear, and products should remain safely encased from factories to stores to kitchen counters. Throughout the decades, packaging design innovations have made this the expectation, not the exception.
Packaging is now durable, but how to transport it easily remains a problem.
Large or heavy packages can be hard to handle. Picture an extra-large box of diapers or a bag of dog food sitting at the end of a long driveway. For many, carrying the package inside would mean an extra trip. For very petite people, people with mobility constraints, or those with young children, it may be a logistical nightmare.
Companies need a way to make packaging more functional for consumers. Enter one of H.B. Fuller’s newest products: the Sesame® Handle system.
Introducing the Sesame® Handle System
The Sesame Handle system includes the Sesame Handle, Sesame Applicator, and Sesame Handle Adhesive. With the system, brand owners and packaging makers can incorporate durable, ergonomic handles directly into boxes during production. Integrating handles into packaging is the next wave in packaging innovation, with huge benefits for consumers, packaging makers, and brand owners.
“It’s not about packaging anymore in today’s market,” says Lisa O’Donnell, Business Development Manager at H.B. Fuller. “It’s about delivering a better experience across the entire value chain. That starts at the packaging maker.”
Sesame Handle—Happier Customers, Less Secondary Packaging
The Sesame Handle lies flat within its housing until used. This ensures it doesn’t catch during filling, palletization, transportation, and storage. H.B. Fuller tests the handles thoroughly to verify they can bear heavy loads, including bulk pet food and cat litter.
For consumers, the handle is convenient and easy to use, helping them carry their purchases and avoid inadvertently dropping them (and potentially breaking them or spilling their contents). For brand owners and packaging makers, the handle:
Minimizes the need for secondary packaging, reducing environmental impact
Attracts customers with its minimal design and convenience
Reduces product drops, enhancing consumer safety and ensuring product quality
Sesame Applicator—In-Line High-Speed Performance
The Sesame Applicator is specialized equipment designed by H.B. Fuller engineers to apply handles at the end of the packaging production process, typically at the folder-gluer machine. The applicator can process up to 10,000 cartons per hour and is highly accurate, with a handle placement deviation of just 2mm from the intended position.
Each applicator is customized to fit within your current packaging process and can use existing vision inspection systems as needed. Streamlined setup requires a single operator and minimizes downtime.
Sesame Handle Adhesive—Expert-Controlled Quality
The Sesame Handle system uses a hot melt adhesive to bond handles and packaging. H.B. Fuller manufactures the adhesive in-house, ensuring it meets industry standards.
This three-part system combines H.B. Fuller’s expertise in adhesive development with custom-engineered equipment to address a real consumer need.
“What makes the Sesame Handle different is that it’s not just a feature, it’s a system-level innovation,” says O’Donnell. “It’s a state-of-the-art application that connects directly to the folder-gluer. It allows the converters to embed functionality into the packaging world without disrupting their workflow.”
How the Sesame Handle Expands the Sesame Line
The Sesame Handle system is an extension of the H.B. Fuller adhesive-coated solutions line for packaging manufacturers and brand owners, including:
Sesame® tapes: Reinforce critical stress areas for bulk bins, heavy-duty boxes, and all types of distribution and shipping boxes. These products help ensure that packaging performs at its best and can be reused whenever possible.
Open-Sesame® technology: This tear tape enables a clean tear without damaging packages. It’s ideal for e-commerce, retail, and shelf-ready packaging solutions, where clean, easy-to-open packaging attracts consumers.
Close-Sesame™ tape: Combine with Open-Sesame tape to reseal e-commerce packages. In-line application simplifies packaging manufacturing steps and optimizes production.
Together, the Sesame products create better packaging for consumers.
Sesame In-Line Integration Benefits Packaging Makers and Brand Owners
For packaging makers and brand owners, Sesame solutions include all the components they need to enhance packaging without rehauling their production processes, as the application technology fits into existing production lines.
“It’s wonderful because it’s all the components the packaging maker or a CPG company would need under one umbrella,” says O’Donnell. “We’re offering more than just an adhesive. We can offer all the components they need to include in their box form. Technically, we provide a total packaging solution with our adhesives, tapes, and coatings for packaging makers and consumers.
Optimizing Production with Custom-Built Equipment and Technical Support
Over 130 years ago, H.B. Fuller launched with a wallpaper adhesive made of fish glue. From that first product, we’ve expanded our line to include over 45,000 SKUs for a wide variety of industries.
All of H.B. Fuller’s equipment is customized, designed, built, installed, and maintained by our technical specialists. Our patented technology is designed for ease of use when dispensing and applying reinforcement and open-system technologies.
In addition to manufacturing specialized equipment, we install it in your plant and provide ongoing technical support to ensure you achieve optimal production levels.
