Der Leim-Talk Blog
Our latest innovative bookbinding adhesive system has won favor among our customers as one of the most durable two-shot adhesive systems in the industry. This adhesive system combines two of our products—HP1117 primer and CG10062 cover glue—to deliver strong adhesion, along with superior heat resistance and low cold-crack values. The HP1117 primer is an ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) adhesive, while the CG10062 is a rubber-based covering glue.
Hybrid Two-Shot Bookbinding Adhesive System
This hybrid two-shot system is the first of its kind in the marketplace. With the wide variety of challenging paper stocks currently in use, this system gives the extra-strong adhesion our customers need. This two-shot solution works well with coated and uncoated paper stocks along with papers with high levels of recycled materials.
"The chemistries of these two glues are very compatible, which gives this system a high level of strength and durability."
Traditionally, adhesive manufacturers have shied away from offering two-shot systems that combine EVA primers with rubber-based cover glues because many of these two types of hot melt adhesives can be incompatible with one another. Thanks to the hard work of our R&D team, these two specific adhesives work very well together. The chemistries of these glues are very compatible, which give this system a high level of strength and durability.
With CG10062 being rubber-based, this two-shot combination carries a broader service temperature range than most other solutions available. The added elasticity that comes with a rubber-based adhesive allows the cover glue to also work well for rounding hardcover book blocks. The finished books are more flexible and durable at high and low temperatures. You don’t have to worry as much about cold-cracking with books exposed to cold temperatures during shipping or storage, and you don’t have to worry about the book block separating down to the gutter at higher temperatures.
Improved High-Temperature Performance and Cold-Crack Resistance
Since the system is new to the marketplace, bookmakers are just getting used to the idea that an EVA-rubber-based combination can be a viable solution for two-shot hardcover work. Early adopters have found the system readily adaptable to their production lines and enjoy the improved high-temperature performance, cold-crack resistance, and overall durability. Customers may have to run their line a little hotter since CG10062 is a thicker cover glue, but from what we’ve seen so far, this can be an ideal solution for many of our bookmaking customers.
