Ködispace 4SG™ Frequently Asked Questions
General Information
-
What is Kodispace 4SG?
H.B. Fuller Kodispace 4SG is a thermoplastic spacer that combines the spacer, desiccant, and primary sealant in one.
-
How is Kodispace 4SG different from other spacers?
Kodispace 4SG bonds directly to the glass panes and creates a tight seal while simplifying production, strengthening IGU durability, and improving energy ratings. The flexible, permanently elastic formulation accommodates the thermal pumping of the IG and is an excellent choice for curved architectural designs.
-
How long does it take for 4SG to develop a bond to glass and cure?
Initial adhesion occurs within 1-24 hours; full cure time depends on environmental conditions.
Technical Information
-
How effective is 4SG at maintaining original Argon gas levels in the insulating glass unit over time?
Kodispace 4SG is highly effective, depending on overall window construction, with a gas permeation rate of 0.0014 g/(m2·h) - one of the lowest in the industry.
-
What is the Ködispace 4SG desiccant capacity?
The average moisture capacity is 3.6% w/w.
-
Since the desiccant is throughout the material, what keeps it from saturating through the path of the secondary seal over time?
Moisture ingress is hindered over time as the material cures, making further moisture ingress more difficult.
-
What are the minimum spacer dimensions and the available airspace widths for Kodispace 4SG units?
Minimum spacer thickness is 4.0 mm; standard cavity widths are from 3-20 mm.
Performance and Compatibility
-
What is the thermal performance of Kodispace 4SG versus other spacer types?
4SG is a warm-edge spacer and thermal properties are listed in the NFRC 101 document; specific testing is available through H.B. Fuller.
-
Can Kodispace 4SG be used with all types of glass?
Yes, as long as the glass meets the industry standards for its category.
-
Does 4SG adhere better to low-E compared to clear glass? Is edge deletion required?
Edge deletion is recommended for moisture ingress prevention; 4SG shows similar adhesion to both clear and low-E coated glass.
-
Do spandrel coatings or does spandrel glass have any effect on 4SG?
Kodispace 4SG can be used with spandrel glass.
-
How much weight can Kodispace 4SG handle when cured?
The weight an IGU can support depends on the strength of the secondary sealant.
Application
-
What type of equipment is required to use a Kodispace 4SG spacer in IGU production?
A robotic applicator is required to apply the Kodispace 4SG to the glass as well as a specific press for creating the IGUs. This equipment is available from multiple manufacturers. H.B. Fuller can supply a list of preferred equipment manufacturers upon request.
-
What is the allowable time 4SG can sit on the application line prior to pressing?
It should not be exposed to the atmosphere for longer than one hour to avoid contamination.
-
Can the application equipment run triples, quads, or offset units and gas fill all cavities?
Yes, the Kodispace 4SG application process is ideal for these multi-cavity units. Please refer to equipment manufacturers’ specifications for more information.
-
Can the machines run shapes?
Yes, each equipment manufacturer will provide information on what shapes can be run.
-
What does a good 4SG splice look like?
An ideal splice is homogenous with no paths for moisture or gas ingress; refer to technical documents for specifications.
-
Equipment manufacturers offer different nozzle sizes - how do I know which one I should use?
Various sizes are available based on the building requirements and environmental conditions at the point of installation; Please refer to equipment manufacturers’ specifications.
