Corporate Citizens, Community Affairs, and Employee Engagement - H.B. Fuller Gets It

Posted 08/09/2016 by Anna Bosak , Community Affairs Specialist

H.B. Fuller’s model of Community Affairs Councils – voluntary, employee-directed councils that manage employee volunteer opportunities and corporate contributions – is an example of how we connect a commitment to our community with employee engagement. Around the world, H.B. Fuller’s 28 Community Affairs Councils (CAC) contribute thousands of hours of volunteer service and over $100,000 in grants to positively impact the communities where our employees live and work.

As an additional benefit, CACs and H.B. Fuller's other community affairs programs also support employee engagement. H.B. Fuller feels strongly about and recognizes the importance of promoting employee engagement. Recent studies have found that an overwhelming number of employees place a high priority on working for a company with strong corporate responsibility practices and a belief in the importance of being a good corporate citizen. Nearly 75 percent of employees polled in a 2016 survey said that they find their job more fulfilling and have better employee satisfaction when their employer makes it possible for them to positively impact environmental and social issues. Furthermore, over 60 percent of millennials polled said that they wouldn’t work for a company without a robust commitment to corporate responsibility.

Community Affairs Councils offer H.B. Fuller employees the opportunity to play a key role in guiding the focus of our community affairs programs and to get involved directly in hands-on work. Additionally, CACs also facilitate improved collaboration between coworkers and the chance to build stronger leadership skills.

Ten employees serve on the CAC based out of our Willow Lake global headquarters. These employees are exploring ways they can connect with our local community and encourage their coworkers to do the same. At the same time, they are building relationships across departments and strengthening their communication, planning, and leadership skills – a win-win for the community and for H.B. Fuller.
