Building a better future with sustainable, state-of-the art facilities

Posted 11/15/2017 by David Moorman, Vice President, Global Operational Excellence

At H.B. Fuller, taking steps to minimize our impact on the environment is a priority. It drives innovation in our products and manufacturing practices, and it also is top of mind when we are expanding our capacity to support our customers around the globe.

In 2014, we opened an environmentally-friendly manufacturing facility in Rionegro, Colombia, that was designed to minimize energy use and waste. In 2015, we celebrated the opening of our LEED®-certified Adhesive Academy in Lüneburg, Germany, making it the first laboratory building in Germany that achieved a Gold certification under version LEED v2009 NC (New Construction)*. And in 2016, we finalized construction on a new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Surabaya, Indonesia, with a similar commitment to minimizing our carbon footprint while strengthening our presence in Southeast Asia. This new facility was built with sustainability in mind before, during and after construction.

It began with site selection. The facility’s site was strategically selected in a developed industrial zone that did not meet criteria to be suitable for other purposes, including farming. And, in an effort to protect or restore the local habitat, we used native or adapted vegetation across more than 50 percent of the site. We also have left nearly 35 percent of the site area, excluding the building footprint, untouched as open space.

Throughout the construction process, we created and implemented a detailed erosion and sedimentation control plan for all construction activities to reduce pollution. And, we diverted about 97 percent of the construction waste from the landfill. In addition, we intentionally built the facility using building materials that contained recycled content or were regionally sourced.

Finally, the building itself was designed with a number of key sustainability features to reduce water use, conserve energy and improve indoor air quality – earning it a LEED® Gold certification under version LEED v2009 NC (New Construction) in June this year, and making it one of only three manufacturing facilities to be LEED® Gold in Indonesia.*

At H.B. Fuller, we continue to look for ways to enable our customers’ sustainability goals and optimize our own operational practices that support energy conservation and reduce waste. And, as we expand our capacity to better serve global customers, we are taking our commitment one step further with construction that’s built for sustainability and designed for the long term.

Acting with integrity and doing the right thing in all of our business practices is fundamental to our philosophy of winning the right way. To learn more, read our 2016 Global Responsibility Report.
