The Changing Landscape of Stress Urinary Incontinence Products

Posted 03/17/2016 by Kirstin Hedin, Global Marketing Manager, Hygiene

Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) occurs when the bladder leaks urine during physical activity or exertion as a result of weakened muscles that control the ability to hold. Recently Euromonitor International, the world’s leading provider of strategic market research, reported that, according to studies published by the National Association for Continence, SUI is the most common form of incontinence among women.

In the United States, the condition reportedly affects 15 million adult women. According to research published by the International Continence Society (ICS), 15 percent of women in Spain, 32 percent of women in France, 32 percent of women in the United Kingdom, and 34 percent of women in Germany experience urinary incontinence, and SUI is the most common underlying symptom. Furthermore, studies released by ICS and others indicate that the median age of women with pure stress incontinence is around 47-48 years, which is much younger compared to urge incontinence and mixed symptoms. The younger age is typically explained by the fact that SUI is often linked to childbirth, among other causes.

Increasing Acceptance of Incontinence Products

These statistics are clearly reflected in changing consumer behavior, as there is increasing acceptance of the valuable role incontinence products play in the lives of many adults and a corresponding rise in demand for products that offer exceptional comfort, fit, and great performance. In 2014, retail sales of incontinence products registered growth of 8 percent in volume and 6 percent in constant value (US$2014 fixed exchange rate), to exceed US$7 billion. The pace of growth is double that of overall retail hygiene as consumers warm to the idea of incontinence products.

Alongside these trends, the development of adhesives, and their role in the transformation of hygiene products, cannot be underestimated. For more than 30 years, H.B. Fuller has helped hygiene customers imagine, create, and design solutions that touch people's lives in simple yet profound ways. Connecting what matters is inherent in what we do for our customers every single day. Consider how the hygiene market has changed, thanks in part to adhesive innovations. Less waste, improved absorption, thinner cores, greater fit and comfort—the list goes on.

Innovation is key. In mature markets, H.B. Helping Customers Meet Hygiene Needs

The hot melt adhesives for elastic attachment in the H.B. Fuller Full-Care 8000 series have been helping customers meet hygiene needs for years. Consider how the Full-Care 8500 family of adhesives keep elastic strands from creeping and can also be used for construction type bonds where extra strength is needed, such as tab or ear attachments, or the Full-Care 9600 and 9700 stretch film lamination products, which are specialized adhesives that provide high bonding strength, with excellent aged performance and stability. All of these adhesives have been developed with the performance standards required by the manufacturer, and with the needs of the consumer in mind.

At H.B. Fuller, we connect what matters to help businesses grow. Understanding our customers’ needs and acting quickly to solve their most pressing adhesion challenges inspires us to develop high-performance adhesives.
