Employees Making a Difference & Connecting What Matters

H.B. Fuller’s Make a Difference volunteer campaign features a wide variety of projects organized by employees around the world. Because each project is planned at the local level, employees are empowered to tailor H.B. Fuller’s commitment to corporate social responsibility to meet the individual needs of the communities where they live and work.

As in years past, this year was no exception when it came to volunteering as there were many excellent examples of projects that employees participated in as a response to specific community needs. Some of these projects included donating books to a secondary school in Suzhou, China; renovating a nonprofit facility that serves unemployed young adults in Lüneburg, Germany; and a major environmental cleanup effort in Tres Rios, Costa Rica. In each of these cases, the success of the project was due in large part to the dedication of the employees coordinating the local implementation of the Make a Difference campaign.

H.B. Fuller Names New Community Affairs Council Chair in Aurora

At H.B. Fuller’s Aurora, Illinois, location, the campaign is supported by the Aurora Community Affairs Council, led this year by a new chair, Heather Godinez. In her first year leading the Aurora Make a Difference volunteer projects, Heather had an ambitious plan to coordinate multiple projects over several weeks, and was strategic in selecting projects that would allow for the greatest possible number of employees to participate. 

One project in particular, in collaboration with Special Spaces, was a dream room makeover for a local child with a life-threatening illness. Volunteers spent the entire day painting and building furniture to give the bedroom a complete renovation, and then unveiled it to the child and his family. A second project involved partnering with a local food pantry to help address food insecurity needs in the Aurora community. For several weeks, employees volunteered to distribute food to clients and also hosted a food drive to further expand the project impact.


A Positive Employee Experience

Heather stepped outside of her comfort zone, and outside of her normal daily work as a scientist, to lead the Make a Difference campaign, strengthening both her project management and communications skills as she organized these volunteer projects. Employees appreciated the opportunity to participate in engaging volunteer projects, and shared positive feedback about their experiences. 

“I was able to see how employees truly enjoyed taking time to give back and make an impact in our community,” said Heather. “I connected with employees that I normally do not have the opportunity to work with – volunteering was a great team building opportunity.” Heather further credits the community involvement of company leaders as a major factor in motivating employees to participate.

Increasing Employee Engagement

Heather’s hard work has shown real results – employee participation in the Make a Difference campaign increased by over 30 percent this year. The impact that the Aurora team could make through their local community involvement exemplifies the way H.B. Fuller employees connect what matters.
