Go Local with Global Support

Rural Market is Catching Up with Urban Areas in India

With India’s GDP set to grow at 7.2 percent in 2018, there is a favorable projection across all industries, spurred by rising purchase power, changes in spending patterns, consumer awareness, rising middle class, and various government initiatives.

The Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) market, the fourth largest sector in India, has a projected growth of 20.6 percent CAGR, with consumption spending almost doubling from 2016 to USD 3.6 trillion by 2020. This growth is supported by the increase of disposable income in rural parts of India, which, combined with a younger workforce, results in efforts to improve infrastructures and distribution channels. The packaging industry needs, therefore, to respond to higher demand and accessibility of goods across the whole country. E-commerce in India, strengthened by the smartphone revolution and the increasing internet speed, is also contributing to this phenomenon with an estimated growth of 28 percent since 2016 to USD 63.7 billion in 2020.

Folding cartons and corrugated boxes play an important role in the current scenario of India’s consumer goods. Overall, there’s a need for lighter, cheaper and prettier packaging. Be it baby food, liquids or personal care items, the home care packaging industry needs to adapt to a reality where consumers are able to buy a wider range of products, in terms of variety and source. Since price and brand integrity are key players at the time of purchase, packaging can play an important role in ensuring the necessary affordability and brand reputation, both in quality and sustainability.

Can You Spot the Challenge?

As the economy grows, the need for organizations to provide world-class support to their customers becomes a priority. The rise of imported equipment to boost quality and scarcity of locally available raw materials creates a challenge for manufacturers to balance cost and quality, while adhering to implemented international standards, such as ISO, and focusing on sustainability.
