Doing More with Less: Our Sustainability Commitment

July 25, 2012

At H.B. Fuller, we have always recognized the need to be responsible, respectful and smart about how we use the world’s resources. Recently we clarified just how we will leave a smaller footprint while making a bigger difference.

I’m pleased to share with your our Sustainability Commitment, which defines the focus of our sustainability efforts and guides how we will minimize our environmental impact while creating value for our customers. To continuously improve our sustainability, H.B. Fuller will focus on:
  • Enabling our customers to improve their products and processes through solutions that help achieve their sustainability goals. Adhesives generally make up a very small part of a product’s whole, but our innovations have the power to create a ripple effect of greater efficiency through our customers’ operations. Our Advantra Encore™ packaging adhesive can reduce adhesive consumption by up to 50 percent by weight, enabling twice as many packages to be sealed with the same amount of adhesive. Our LiquaMelt® adhesive system innovates with using 40% renewable components in addition to reducing adhesive comsumption.   Across customers and continents, that impact can grow.
  • Optimizing our facilities’ operations and process efficiency. Internally, much of our commitment focuses on reducing energy usage, greenhouse gases, water usage and waste. Some of our facilities already have realized significant gains in these areas. For instance our Covington. Ga., and Roseville, Calif., plants, reduced wastewater generation by 58 percent between 2002 and 2010. We are working to build upon these successes and demonstrate progress year over year.
  • Engaging our employees to be knowledgeable about and responsible for safety, wellness and reaching our sustainability targets. In the past five years, we have reduced work injuries by 63 percent and occupational injuries by 40 percent. In 2011, we were awarded Ethisphere’s Ethics Inside® Certification for demonstrating ethical business practices. We also have a long history of giving back to our communities through giving, volunteerism and support from the H.B. Fuller Company Foundation and employee-led Community Affairs Councils (CACs). Our employees have played an important role in helping us excel at the social aspects of sustainability.
Today sustainability is often defined as balancing economic, environmental and social development to meet the needs of the present without compromising the needs of future generations. It is something that has been—and will continue to be—important to H.B. Fuller as we deliver for customers and our communities.
